Retro Hotel Žalec – Charm of the Past, Comfort of Today

Retro Hotel Žalec was built in 1980 as Hotel Rubin and quickly became one of the most modern buildings in the Savinja Valley, as well as the center of the region’s social and economic life. After 1985 it was managed by the company Hmezad, and following Slovenia’s independence it became a mixed enterprise later taken over by the Lamovšek family. During this time, the hotel remained a vibrant place for weddings, business events, social evenings, and community gatherings.

History That Shapes Us

Over the years, the hotel slowly lost its former shine but remained a recognizable symbol of the town. When the opportunity for a new beginning arose, the Municipality of Žalec decided to preserve it as part of the town’s shared story. Today, a new chapter is being written – Hotel Žalec is reborn as a retro hotel, once again bringing people together and intertwining culture, education, entrepreneurship, and youth creativity.

The hotel exists thanks to the vision and courage of those who, decades ago, created a space for connection and community. Standing on their foundations today, we can both honor the past and write a new story – one that blends retro tradition with modern comfort.

We offer comfortable bed & breakfast accommodation, while light meals are available in our café. Special care is given to guests on the move – cyclists, hikers, and motorcyclists – as the surrounding area offers many trails inviting you to explore nature. MC Hotel Žalec gladly welcomes both individuals and groups.
